About Península Valdés

Sunday 3 February 2013

Saturday Feb 2 (I think). Península Valdés is a remarkable place, but not necessarily for the published reasons--the whale spawning grounds, massive sea lion colonies that prey on the world's anchovy stocks, and adorable penguins.
For us, its the amazing proximity and richness of so many different geographies within a few miles. Only 3 or 4 roads intersect the peninsula and they are all unpaved. The dust! Valdez is basically a full desert environment surrounded by long empty beaches teeming with big-name sea animals. But it's the interior that draws my heart. I think I fell in love with the desert in Israel and being in one again is like a homecoming.
Yesterday we had a beautiful day walking among the sand cliffs that rise steeply off the beaches. When you turn and look inland you could easily be among the camel routes of sub-saharan Africa. The dunes are velvety smooth,a soothing putty colour against bright blue sky. Apparently local teenaged boys come here to sandsurf using what looks like snowboards. But we didn't see any of that yesterday. Although it's peak summer here,we were totally alone with the desert. Most other people here are argentinians, and they prefer the beach, which is lovely and warm. At low tide in late afternoon the beach becomes so large it must be at least 350 metres wide. Many families draw soccer fields in the wet sand, and play until 7 pm or so when the sun begins to get low. Dinner is usually 9:30 pm or later.
Today we will explore the desert on mountain bikes with a guide. Six hours of up and down in sand. I look forward with trepidation as i am the pollo of the group ie. the chicken. Photos to follow. Abrazos de todos, Esther con David, Annice y Simon.
